Photo Display Sizes

Because photos are displayed in two places in the event calendar, in aggregate on the main events or search pages and on the event detail page, photos should be no smaller than 250px  square. You may upload rectangle or vertical photos, but the event photos will always display in a square or round frame.

  • Event Listing photos are ~ 80 x 80
  • Event Detail Page + Featured Events are ~ 200 x 200

Photo Selection

Good photos are:

  • Eye-catching – users are scanning the event listing pages, a bright, clear photo will catch their attention.
  • Bright – photos with a simple, bright color palette make good choices
  • Simple – your image should have a simple focal point, and be recognizable in both small or large. Aim for images that are not too busy, especially at a small scale.
  • Relevant – pick an image that represents the event, rather than something generic, like a building or a generic campus shot.
  • Closely cropped – make sure you crop your photo to show the main focal point, so that users see what you want them to see without distractions.

Poor photos:

  • Have Text – the event listing photo is quite small, especially on phones or other devices, and text will be unreadable. scans of event flyers, presentation papers, or other textual information. It’s also generally cropped, so users won’t even be able to read what’s in the image, even if it were large enough.
  • Generic – pictures of buildings, campus, or other generic photos don’t do anything to attract the audience, and actually create confusion. Unless you are promoting an architectural tour, don’t use a photo of a building!

This photo has text, but because of the crop, it’s unreadable, even at a large size. A better choice might have shown students, or the presenter of this workshop.

Generic

This photo of a building doesn’t represent the activity, yoga, at all. A better choice might have been a person doing yoga, or even a yoga mat.
